VIDES UK is part of an International Voluntary Organisation founded in 1987 by the Salesian Sisters
“We give young people the opportunity to volunteer, making a difference in the lives of children and young people here in the UK and all over the world”
"We respond to the need of local communities collaborating in the development of an ongoing service for the young that will be a positive influence for all”
To be ‘Salesian' means to follow St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello's way of working with young people. We believe and see the potential in each individual and set out to empower young people to be true to themselves, reach their full potential and to be the protagonists in building a better world.
VIDES UK trains volunteers so that they can make a difference in the lives of children and young people. Our VIDES Volunteers have many different opportunities to get involved and to make a difference. Training and formation for volunteers takes place before every VIDES project and our volunteers are supported throughout their time with VIDES UK. There are opportunities to volunteer in the UK and abroad.
VIDES Volunteers run activities for young people aged 14-16 throughout the year. We want all young people to know that they matter and that they have the potential to make a difference. We listen carefully to young people and try to make their ideas for VIDES programmes a reality. Some of our youth programmes include the ‘VIDES for Youth’ Weekend, VIDES Friends Clubs and our annual Summer Holiday.
Last August, 4 VIDES Volunteers travelled to Dagoretti, Kenya to work with VIDES Kenya on our annual Group Project. They fundraised before they left, so that they could take out sports equipment and arts and crafts activities. They ran activities with all the local children and young people and lived as community.
In November 2012, our annual ‘VIDES for You’ Weekend was held. This weekend gives our volunteers the chance to meet up with each other, to share their memories of the summer and to take part in some training activities.
In February, around 25 young people attended our annual VIDES View Weekend. All of these young people were interested in being VIDES Volunteers in the future. The theme of the weekend was ‘Explore’ and all the young people enjoyed learning more about the work of VIDES UK.
In May 2013, we ran our annual VIDES Friends Residential. Young people from across the UK who are involved in VIDES Friends Clubs were invited to take part. The theme was ‘Let’s Make Some Noise’ and all of the young people had a great time meeting new friends and taking part in a wide range of activities.
