Salesian Spirituality Training Programme

In November, a group small group of volunteers started upon a new journey. They began a course of three weekends based on Salesian Spirituality. With open minds, they arrived on the Friday evening completely unaware of what the weekend was going to entail or indeed what the outcome would be.
They didn’t have to worry. The weekend was a huge success! The days were split into 8 sessions all based on different aspects of Salesianity. Sessions included Mary Mazzerello, Don  Bosco, St Francis De Sales and Youth Spirituality to name a few. There was input in each session and then reading and group activities.
The volunteers who took part all agreed that they came apprehensive, willing to listen and eager to find out more. They left on the Sunday feeling enthused challenged and more aware of the true value of following Salesian ways.

10th Anniversary of VIDES UK Camp

VIDES UK was proud to celebrate the tenth anniversary of UK camps. A group of 5 volunteers planned and delivered a celebration day in Brettargh Holt for over 80 people, including past and present volunteers, host communities, the wider Salesian Family and benefactors. This took place on 14th May and had the theme ‘A Time For…’

The day was used to give thanks for and celebrate the work of VIDES; share the work of VIDES with the wider Salesian Family and to bring together pastand present volunteers. We were honoured to have Sr. Elizabeth Purcell back with us to share her thoughts on the VIDES journey. The day was a mixture of presentations, workshops and informal sharing of experiences. It culminated with a celebration of Mass and certainly was a day to be remembered.

MakePovertyHistory campaign

A group of VIDES volunteers, joined thousands of others in Edinburgh for the G8 march on the 2nd July in support of the MakePovertyHistory campaign. It was a glorious day as over 250,000 people stood united in conviction that things needed to change and that we would raise our voices unceasingly to demand this! We listened to a number of inspirational speakers who reiterated the fact that we were not interested in charity, but were calling for justice for all those living on less than $1 a day and dying needlessly. At 3pm there was a moment of silence as we paid tribute to all the lives lost every 3 seconds as a result of poverty. It was a sobering moment as some of us contemplated how many lives were lost in that paltry minute. The march around the city was fantastic as West African drummers provided the music and chanted their desires for peace and justice with the crowd providing the echo. The feeling that will never be forgotten as we marched the streets with banners and placards raised high was the spirit of unity and solidarity which encompassed us all. With such cohesive vision anything is possible.
