What is a "Formation Camp"?
A project where young people come together to serve the needs of young people in their local community. It offers:
- Training for volunteers to work for young people aged 8-17yrs
- A residential experience for volunteers 17+
- A summer scheme for local young people
It is an experience not to be missed!
Who are Formation Camps for?
Anyone who is:
- Energetic
- Enthusiastic
- Aged 17+
- Interested in working with the young and has a sense of humour!
When did Camps start?
The first camp was in the summer of 1995 and since then there have been 1 or 2 VIDES camps every year.
Where do Camps take place?
So far Formation Camps have taken place in schools, church halls and youth centres across the UK. i.e. Newcastle, Cumbria, Liverpool, Scotland, London
VIDES UK will work wherever there is a need in the community and an opportunity for the volunteers to learn more about themselves and young people.
What EXACTLY do you do on a Camp?
- Build community with a team of volunteers
- Work for 7-10 days with young people and children
- Plan & prepare educational and leisure activities in smaller groups e.g. arts & crafts, dance, music, games, sport...
- Receive ongoing support and training throughout the camp
How are Camps organised?
Lots of VIDES volunteers are members of different groups that help in some
way to plan & prepare the work of VIDES UK. The Camp Core Group do all the
background work before the camp, organising rotas, activities, personnel,
equipment etc. They also organise the training of the Volunteers before
the camp.
How can you attend a Formation Camp?
All you have to do is attend one training weekend for your particular camp and be prepared to give one week/ten days of your Summer/Easter holiday in order to have a brilliant time!
What will I get out of it?
- Training in areas such as communication, leadership and team building skills
- Experience of working with children and young people.
- Child Protection Training
- You will also have a great time and make some long lasting friendships!
